Spring is officially here (I’m typing this while on Spring Break vacation) and just like I’ve cleaned out my closet and filled it with new trends and updated classics, the contents of my vanity drawer need updating as well. I’m not what I would consider a “high-maintenance” kinda gal. Life gets busy and sometimes I’m just lazy. Some days I will draw in a little cat-eye with my tub of black liner, some days it’s just a swipe of mascara. More often than not, lipstick is only ever applied in the car (at a stop-light!) as a last-minute remembrance! It wasn’t even until a few years ago that I even bought my first tube of lipstick (and liner, and lipgloss.) I used to think that a swipe of mascara was the only little oomph I needed to make me feel feminine and not so soccer-mom-frumpy (especially when I wear a baseball hat.) I was wrong. Lipstick is like an instant mood-lifter; an instant confidence booster. If there is any one thing I would always recommend to any women – it’s lipstick. Screw the mascara, splurge on lipstick, and this spring the hottest trend (according to Ulta’s Top 5 Spring Obsessions) is the not nude lip. What is the not nude lip? Well, obviously a nude lip is your natural lip which makes the not-nude lip trend a soft, natural-looking, glossy version of your natural lips. I know several women who think they look like death without lipstick/color, so I
worked hard played all day long finding a few options that will fit any budget.
Be sure to check out Meg’s post on how to wear the not nude lip trend for additional tips and tricks on how to complete your makeup while wearing the not nude lip (p.s. She is a lipstick queen!)
While I was
working playing, I took the opportunity to test out Ulta’s other four spring trend obsessions, starting with the ethereal eyes.
I’m not going to lie, eye shadows are my own personal nemesis; with muted gold undertones and natural hues of browns, my nemesis has been backed into a corner (haha.) I love the hint of gold, and can’t wait to pair it with the sun-kissed glow of a soft summer tan.
Next up, my ulta-mate fave trend/obsession: blackest black. I love a smoky eye, a dark kohl liner, a stunning cat-eye – I love them all! My eyes are definitely my best feature and I love the stark contrast of a deep black.
There are so many different types of eyeliner out there it could make your head spin. Experts say that brushing a dip into a jar of liner is the ultimate taskmaster, but the self-sharpening pencils are every girl’s best friend. A liquid liner over the soft pencil will deepen the effect, and this liner is like the best of all world’s combined into one easier to use (practice makes perfect) product every girl should test out.
With most of my make-up on, I dared to go where I’ve never gone before: contouring. I’m not easily intimidated, but this is one trend that truly intimidates me. After having Kristen (make-up artist and expert extraordinaire) apply it while walking me through it, I’m no longer intimidated. It’s incredible what it can do, but as a photographer, I think it’s best left for times when you need to be photographed or events like walking the runway (it’s Kansas City Fashion Week in a few short days!) What do you all think?
Last, but never least, is the final and fifth trend/obsession: short and shiny. As in nails. Short I can do – shiny is a given. I always stick to my pinks, reds and corals, but summer (and a sun-kissed glow on my skin) is the perfect time to branch out and try new colors and even the uber-trendy gel polishes (that you no longer have to go to the salon for!)
