Home for the Holidays

Breakfast in bed

We are home for the holidays this year and I’m in the spirit to prep our home for the guests arriving in the next few weeks. I love being a hostess, and it never hurts if I have the mostess (just kidding, but I do appreciate an original idea.) I love the holidays, and for so many years I allowed myself to be wowed into buying a house full of Christmas decor that then gets packaged gently and hidden in the basement for the next eleven months. While it’s fun to get festive and lose myself in a sea of green and reds, plaids, glittery golds and icy blues – it ends up feeling slightly chaotic and with the latest snow dumped upon us, I’m dreaming of tropical islands with fresh fruit and lush green foliage, with freshly laundered and pressed, crisp white luxury bedding.  While we usually stay home for December 25 (Christmas is NOT portable-friendly haha so it’s usually home for the holidays!) we have taken the long winter break holiday as a fun holiday – usually Disneyland or Disney World. California is always gorgeous (albeit a bit chilly after midnight on New Year’s Eve), but one year we went to Florida on a whim and hit the jackpot; perfectly warm temperatures and clear, sunny skies! Our friends from church were in Florida the next week and it was cold and rainy – the entire time they were there!  We were so lucky!

Breakfast in bed

Whoa! Did I just get seriously sidetracked? Yes, I did, #sorrynotsorry haha!  I am always tempted to buy beautiful, luxurious bedding in the most amazing patterns and hues.  I have to remind myself that bedding is like an article of clothing – spend good money of classic-white luxury bedding and play around with the rest!

Breakfast in bed

For quick breakfasts, I prefer donuts and other pastries – easy to pickup if you don’t have time for making them from scratch (and for which you deserve major props!) Milks, cereals, freshly squeezed citrus fruits, get creative and fun, every guest loves breakfast in bed. On Christmas morning I will make a large English traditional breakfast (okay, a Barnes-English not-very-traditional breakfast) with scones and lemon curd, coffee cakes (they taste delicious without the coffee, thank you) and more. Photos of that breakfast to come soon! The best part of white linens? As easy as a stain will show, it’s usually just as easy to bleach it out. Don’t be afraid of white luxury bedding! Enjoy the holiday season with a beachy yet holiday appropriate guest bedroom (and breakfast in bed!) Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

5 Tips for Hosting Guests this Holiday Season

  • Freshly-squeezed juice

If you can do this, do this.  None of that frozen-from-concentrate stuff.  I once had oranges cut straight from my sister’s orange trees in Arizona.  It had gotten cold enough overnight that the oranges were just chilled, and with no juicer, we just cut the oranges in slices and noisily sucked the juice out of them; it was messy and  I loved every minute of it!  They were amazing.  So is my sister.

  • Carbs

Because every wants one right?  I mean, donuts.  Of course, keep in mind the dietary necessities of your guests 😉

  • Trays

I can’t get enough of trays.  They don’t stack or store well, but you can use them for so many things – coffee table trays with fresh flowers and books, breakfast-in-bed trays, dining room centerpieces, lightroom boxes (say what?!) and more.  Like colored glass, I just can’t help but waste spend my money on them!

  • Laughter

I know, it’s super-cheesy and all touchy-feely, but seriously, laughter is the best medicine!  Am I right (you need to say those words all close together like amiright?!)

  • Fresh Flowers

I just bought a bunch of (somethings) from the local club the other day.  They lasted all week and were amazing.  I had 5 bud vases placed around my home for under $8!

It’s not needed but it’s too pretty not to have in the kitchen during the holidays!
